About us
Expertise since 1862
Craftsmanship and high-tech, tradition and modernity come together in the family business Wilhelm Julius Teufel GmbH. Based in the south-west of Germany in the Stuttgart region, we see ourselves as a partner to the healthcare trade. Founded in Stuttgart in 1862 by the Teufel family, who gave the company its name. Starting out as a manufacturer of bandages, the company expanded in the following years to become a manufacturer with an international focus by consistently focussing on quality and a wide range of products.
As early as the beginning of the 20th century, the company established its own foreign branches, including in Paris, Istanbul and New York. The branch there was located directly on Wall Street. In the 1920s, the company’s product range was comprehensively expanded with the opening of the prosthetics division. This included the production of wooden parts for the manufacture of leg prostheses as well as the production of stump socks. From the 1960s onwards, Wilhelm Julius Teufel GmbH was a leader in the implementation of the newly developed plastics in orthopaedic technology. Materials such as Ortholen and Tepefom, to which the company still owns the name rights today, expanded the possibilities of orthopaedic technology to include production techniques such as thermoforming.
In the 1980s, the technology of the prosthetic area was supplemented by a CNC production line for modular components. International business collaborations enabled a further expansion of the portfolio, for example through the acquisition of one of the first carbon fibre knee joints for European distribution.
In addition to the expansion of our own development activities, the cooperation with WillowWood, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of prosthetic liners, which began in 2009, represented an important milestone.
A further step towards the future was taken with the cooperation of the Dutch company Reboocon. The distribution of the Intuy Knee opened up the next stage in the supply of active electronic knee joints.
We can look back on over 160 years of history, development and pioneering spirit. Our future and objective is to provide the best possible care for patients and users.
